Apoorva Sharma is undertaking his Ph.D. at La Trobe Law School. His doctoral thesis examines the relationship between minimum wage and poverty under the supervision of Dr. Luis Eslava and Dr. Julia Dehm. The project identifies three major characteristics of how the minimum wage operates, namely depoliticisation, bureaucratisation and rendering technical, alongside examples from the historical origins of the minimum wage through archival research and the modern minimum wage through interviews with relevant stakeholders. 

Apoorva's research is part of the Global Poverty and the 21st Century Project coordinated by Dr Luis Eslava. Apoorva's research contends that the minimum wage exists to maintain a certain level of productivity and profitability which is imposed against the background threat of precarity, looking at India and Australia as case studies.

Prior to joining La Trobe, Apoorva was an Associate Professor at OP Jindal Global University in India, teaching undergraduate and graduate law students a variety of subjects, including labour law, criminal procedure and intellectual property rights.
