BIO

Andréia Aguiar Paranaguá is a PhD candidate at the Law School, La Trobe University, under the supervision of Dr Luis Eslava and Dr Laura Griffin. Her doctoral research, commenced in March 2024, investigates the relationship between socio-economic marginalisation and access to safe abortion in Brazil, with a particular focus on the state of Tocantins. Her thesis examines how restrictive abortion laws and the growing backlash from conservative actors affect marginalised women and girls, as well as the organisations and health professionals supporting reproductive rights.

Her research is part of the Global Poverty and the 21st Century Project coordinated by Dr Luis Eslava. She is deeply committed to the study of reproductive justice and is particularly interested in the gendered dimensions of poverty and rights violations in the Global South.

Before moving to Australia to pursue her PhD, Andréia practised as a civil lawyer in Brazil, managing complex legal cases in civil and family law. Her extensive legal career included coordinating legal teams, mentoring interns, and providing strategic legal counsel.
