BIO

Dr Alex Stumpf is a Senior Lecturer and applied research engineer at La Trobe University and a member of the RAMPS research group, specialising in turning engineering research into practical industry solutions. His work spans electronics, mechanical systems and software, with a strong focus on industry partnerships and student engagement.
 
Alex leads a research program developing advanced hydroponic growing systems that have demonstrated up to 100% yield improvements and progressed to commercial pilot deployment. The project has generated multiple provisional patents, attracted over $2 million in funding, was internationally recognised as runner‑up in NASA’s Deep Space Food Challenge, and earned his team the 2024 Vice‑Chancellor’s Innovation Award.
 
He also works closely with South East Water and Intelligent Water Networks to develop robotic and sensor technologies for assessing ageing sewer infrastructure, securing more than $500,000 in funding and delivering field‑tested prototypes.
 

Alex has contributed to strategic innovation initiatives at La Trobe, including co‑designing a program that equipped regional business leaders with advanced innovation capabilities through the $2.2 million SURF project. He holds a PhD in electric motor control systems, has contributed to electric vehicle drivetrain development, and is a registered professional engineer in both Mechanical and Electrical disciplines.
