Dr Audrey Tierney Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Office of Allied Health

Audrey Tierney is a well-established clinical nutrition researcher in Nutrition and Dietetics. She is an Accredited Practising Dietitian, a Senior lecturer at La Trobe University (Level C) and a Senior Clinical Nutritionist and Dietitian at Alfred Health. She has been active in the area of clinical nutrition research and dietary intervention studies since 2004 and her doctoral and post-doctoral studies were based on EU funded international clinical trials in the prevention and management of Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes from the basic science to the molecular level.

Audrey's clinical expertise is primarily in the area of metabolic health, but has worked as a senior clinician with leadership roles in the intensive care setting and in respiratory medicine. With respect to her clinical research, Audrey was awarded the RFA Understanding Disease, Game Changing Partnership Grant in 2014 to undertake a RCT entitled MEDINA in three metropolitan teaching hospitals in Melbourne investigating the effects of a Mediterranean Diet in patients with Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Audrey was previously awarded the ICU-Monash Research Fellowship in 2011 to undertake an observational study to investigate the resting metabolic rate of critically ill patients and compare to standard practice. She is a CI on a successful grant application to carry out a RCT in obese patients in the ICU setting to deliver energy and protein targets to their resting metabolic rate compared to equation based requirements.

Audrey is a committee member and organiser of the 'Nutrition in ICU Symposium' run annually and is serving on the National Diabetes Services Scheme and Australian Diabetes Society to draft the first National Enteral Guidelines for Diabetes. She is an Evidence Based Practice Expert and Section Leader for the Australasian Cystic Fibrosis Nutrition Guidelines Committee. Audrey regularly reviews papers for the following journals: Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Nutrition and Dietetics (Journal of the Dietitian's Association of Australia, Journal of Dietitians New Zealand), Journal of Cystic Fibrosis.
