Dr Adam Hill Rolander Research Fellow, Aust Res Ctr Sex Hlth&Soc

I am a public health sociologist who specialises in sexual health, HIV, and sexuality research at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health & Society at La Trobe University. My research focuses on LGBTI health and well-being, social capital and HIV risk-taking behaviors, as well as suicide risk among Men who have Sex with Men.

Prior to commencing work at ARCSHS, I spent 12 years in Japan undertaking research with the University of Tokyo, the University of the Ryukyus, and the University of Melbourne. During this time, I conducted a variety of national studies that explored HIV risk and prevention among gay and bisexual men, including: (1) The first survey of HIV risk-taking behaviors among non-community-attached gay and bisexual indigenous men in Okinawa; (2) The largest survey of HIV risk-taking behaviors and recent suicidal ideation among gay and bisexual men in Greater Tokyo and Kyushu in Japan; (3) Developing the first acute HIV checker application for MSM in Asia. Findings from these projects have been reported widely by organisations including the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare, Japan Foundation for AIDS Prevention, Avert.org, AIDS 2018, and international peer reviewed journals through 2020.

I am currently working on a number of projects at ARCSHS including: (1) The largest national study of mental health and resilience of young LGBTIQA+ people living in Australia; (2) A comparative study of HIV risk taking behaviours among gay and bisexual men living in six nations in Asia and the Pacific including Japan; (3) The largest national survey of health-related needs among LGBTI adults in Australia. All projects include close consultation with community and government partners to ensure alignment with policy and program development need.

My research has been funded by international fellowships, competitive international and domestic funding schemes, public sector grants, and competitive internal university funding.
