Professor Ben Cocks Professor Biosciences Research Centre, Dep AppliedSystem Biology

Ben has a track record in innovation and the practical application of biotechnology in agribusiness and drug discovery, and currently leads as Co-Director successful dairy industry programs with investment grants of >$100 million over 5 years for the improvement of forages and animals employing new technologies for impact in pastoral industries. Previous roles included Senior Director of Drug Discovery Biology at Incyte Corporation in the US and scientist at DNAX (now part of Merck Inc) in California, pioneering the application of genomics for understanding mammalian systems. Significant discoveries include a key pathway determining the development of parasitic, viral, and inflammatory diseases; SLAM as a key immune signalling receptor important for T and B cell interaction and activation; new genetics applications in cattle, and novel factors from cows’ milk and wallaby milk.
