Balu practised as an Advocate and Solicitor in Singapore for over 23 years. For 17 of those years he was the Managing and Precedent Partner of the law firm of B. Rao & K.S. Rajah. His practice was primarily in the field of insurance litigation as the firm acted for various international and regional insurance companies based in Singapore. Balu's court work as lead counsel, was in the fields of product liability, political risks, casualty and liability claims and professional indemnity insurance cover which involved the defence of architects, accountants, land surveyors and civil engineers. He also led and supervised claims investigation teams in fraud and casualty cover in Pakistan, Iran, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Australia.
Prior to joining the School of Law, Balu lectured and tutored at the Law School of the University of Queensland. He pioneered the teaching of Insurance Law to law undergraduates when he devised and delivered a course in that area in 2005 and 2007. He also coordinated and lectured on the Insurance Law and Practice module for the LLM course in 2006 and 2008. He also guest lectured and tutored in Law of Contracts (2006) and Torts (2008). His other teaching activities were coordinating and lecturing in Sports Arbitration Law for the LLM course in 2006 and Legal Environment of Business, a commercial law course for non-law postgraduate students in 2006 and 2007.
At La Trobe Law School, Balu has taught a wide variety of subjects including Constitutional Law, Tort Law, General Insurance Law and Contracts A and Contracts B His current teaching focus lies in the two modules relating to Contract Law. He is scheduled to teach General Insurance Law in the first semester of 2019.
