Dr Christopher Bruce Lecturer, Occupational Therapy Northern, Occupational Therapy

Dr. Chris Bruce is a registered occupational therapist (OT) with a clinical and academic background. Chris has a clinical background in neurological rehabilitation and graduated from Brunel University in the UK in 2001. Chris commenced his academic career in 2009 and is currently the OT Discipline Lead at La Trobe University. His doctoral research was in the area of risk taking and hazard perception training for drivers with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Chris is committed to working with academics to help them prepare the next generation of critical thinking, practice ready professionals. Chris has extensive experience in curriculum design and teaching. He is an award-winning educator, having received two La Trobe teaching awards for: Approaches to teaching and the support of learning that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn. Chris supervises Master’s and Doctoral students and his teaching practice embraces the work of Felten et al. (2016), who emphasize the importance of relationship building in teaching and learning. Chris’ teaching also draws on Growth Mindset theory (Dweck, 2017), which situates the learner on a learning curve. Chris believes that fostering a growth mindset can lead to increased student motivation and deeper learning. Chris has authored a number of peer-reviewed teaching and learning focussed articles in addition to his disciplinary rehabilitation research.

Chris is highly engaged in the professional practice space nationally through membership to Australia & New Zealand Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Academics (ANZOTFA). In 2019, Chris organised and hosted a highly successful 3-day ANZOTFA and Australia & New Zealand Council of OT educators (ANZCOTE) National forum at La Trobe University City Campus in Melbourne, and looks forward to furthering his collaboration with OT educator colleagues nationally.
