Dr Emerald King Lecturer - Japanese, Japanese

Emerald L King is a lecturer in Japanese at La Trobe University, Australia.

She studied in Australia and Japan before receiving her PhD in Japanese literature from the University of Tasmania in 2012. She worked at Victoria University of Wellington from 2013-2018 and was appointed head of Japanese in 2016.

Emerald's research interests include violence in text; masochistic theory; kimono in Japanese literature; costume representation in anime and manga; and cosplay in Japan and Australasia.

In 2009/2010 Emerald completed a Japan Foundation Doctoral Fellowship to conduct research at Ochanomizu University (Tokyo, Japan) for 11 months under Dr Satako Kan and Dr Kazuko Takemura.

As part of her cosplay research she has competed in and won a number of prizes, most notably winning the 2016 finals of the Madman National Cosplay Championship (MNCC), placing in 2012 and 2018, and placing third and second in the 2018 and 2019 heats of the Australian selection round of the World Cosplay Summit (WCS)
