Dr Emma Russell Senior Lecturer, Crime,Justice & Legal Studies

I research in the fields of critical carceral studies and queer criminology. Principally concerned with processes of criminalisation and incarceration, my research program explores themes of power, violence and resistance. I use qualitative methods and have an emphasis on in-depth local case studies with transnational relevance. I am particularly interested in activist archives; anti-carceral feminism, critical race and queer theory; and geographies of sound. Proceeding from a commitment to social justice, my work is fundamentally interdisciplinary, combining critical criminology and socio-legal studies with insights from cultural and media studies, geography, and history.
