Dr Emma Russell Senior Lecturer, Crime,Justice & Legal Studies

My research program focuses on themes of criminalisation, incarceration and activism. It aims to build knowledge about gender, racial and sexual inequalities; queer, feminist and abolitionist social movement histories; and carceral geographies. I have experience in a range of qualitative methods of research, including interviews, archival research, media analysis, ethnography and case studies. As an interdisciplinary scholar, my research contributes to the fields of punishment and society; critical, queer and sensory criminology; and socio-legal studies. It is grounded by a commitment to social justice and decarceration.
