Dr Emma Russell Senior Lecturer, Crime,Justice & Legal Studies

I research in the fields of critical carceral studies and queer criminology. My research program focuses on criminalisation, incarceration and activism. I use qualitative methods to explore themes of power and systemic violence and place emphasis on in-depth local case studies with transnational relevance. I am particularly interested in themes of gender, sexuality and race; queer, feminist and abolition theory; carceral geography and sound studies. Proceeding from a commitment to social justice and decarceration, my work is fundamentally interdisciplinary, combining critical criminology and socio-legal studies with insights from history, geography and media studies.
