Flavia Wassef Graduate Researcher, Physiology Anatomy & Microbiology

My research is focussed on understanding one of the possible underlying causes of hypertension being the gut microbiome. Specifically, I am interested in the role of the gut microbiome and the immune system in promoting the vascular inflammation that contributes to this condition. My studies will look at a temporal relationship between experimental high blood pressure and how alterations of the gut microbiome including, bacteria and phage, may trigger the immune system to elicit an inflammatory response further exacerbating the development of hypertension.
