Professor McLachlan is Professor at the Judith Lumley Centre (formerly Mother and Child Health Research), and Discipline Lead (Midwifery) School of Nursing and Midwifery, La Trobe University. She has a background as a nurse and midwife. Her research interests include Aboriginal maternal and infant health, models of maternity care including caseload midwifery and homebirth, postnatal care, perinatal depression,and breastfeeding. She has conducted studies using a variety of research designs (e.g. RCTs, surveys, cohort studies, focus groups). Her major teaching area is postnatal care.
