Dr Kate AshmanSenior Lecturer, Accounting & Data Analytics
Kate is a Senior Lecturer and Academic Co-ordinator for the Business School at La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus. She is a Chartered Accountant who has extensive industry experience working as an auditor in Melbourne with the Big 4 Chartered Accounting firm Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu before relocating to Bendigo and working in a large regional practice. Kate holds a Graduate Diploma in Education (with Distinction) and has furthered her interest in accounting education by completing her PhD in this area.
Kate is the subject co-ordinator and lecturer for the first-year introductory accounting unit and the third-year work placement subject. She takes great satisfaction from assisting students to adjust to university life in first-year and seeing the development in their skills and confidence in third year as they are on the cusp of becoming professional accountants. Up to a third of Bendigo accounting students undertake this work experience opportunity which gives them practical experience in the field of their chosen profession, while counting as the completion of an elective unit at the same time. The ongoing support of our local accounting firms and businesses is crucial and is built on a strong collaborative partnership with the Bendigo campus of La Trobe.
Kate’s key research interests are in first-year education and methods to maximise student knowledge and experience and work placements and their importance to students and communities in both the short and long-term.
