Associate Professor Matthew Perugini Associate Professor, Biochemistry

A/Prof Perugini completed both his undergraduate BSc and BSc(Honours) degrees at the University of Melbourne in the 1990s, and then his PhD in 2002 on the 'Characterisation of Human Apolipoprotein E3 and E4 Isoforms' supervised by Geoff Howlett in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, University of Melbourne.

In 2005, A/Prof Perugini moved to the new Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute (Bio21 Institute) at the University of Melbourne. In January 2012, A/Prof Perugini relocated his laboratory to the new $100 million La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) where he currently holds a teaching & research position in the Department of Biochemistry & Genetics, School of Molecular Sciences.

His research focuses on (i) structure, function, dynamics and interaction network of human and mouse apolipoprotein E isoforms linked to health and age-related diseases (such as late-onset Alzheimer's disease), and (ii) novel antibiotic design targeting key enzymes of the diaminopimelate biosynthesis pathway of pathogenic bacteria, and the more esoteric aim of (iii) unravelling the molecular evolution in quaternary structure and allosteric regulation of the rate-limiting enzyme from the pathway - dihydrodipicolinate synthase (DHDPS). As a result of his recent research activities, A/Prof Perugini was promoted to Reader at the beginning of 2010.

A/Prof Perugini has published more than 100 journal articles, reviews and book chapters to date, with a total of >3,000 citations and a H-index of 27. He serves on a number of University committees, including the College of SHE Mobility Advisory Group, LIMS Research Committee, LIMS Graduate Research. He also contributes to community service initiaitves including (1) NHMRC panel member (2011-2014), (2) Associate Editor of PLoS One and IUBMB LIfe, (3) Lorne Conference for Protein Structure & Function committee (2005-2015), (4) ComBio2015 program co-chair, (5) Chair of the 22nd International Conference on Analytical Ultracentrifugation (AUC2015).
