Dr Paul McInerney Macroinvertebrate Project Coordinator, Murray Darling FRC

I am broadly interested in ecology and ecological interactions. Much of my research has been focused on how invasive species may alter structure and function within freshwater ecosystems and what implications precipitate at micro and macro scales. I am interested in food webs and how energy flow in ecosystems may be changed by both biotic and abiotic disturbance or by anthropogenic intervention. I use both classical quantitative biological measures (e.g. macroinvertebrate abundance) and next generation measures (e.g. DNA sequencing) to describe communities and a range of metrics to help trace energy flow within ecosystems (e.g. gut samples, stable isotopes and fatty acids).
