The Lab comprises technology clubs run specifically for adolescents on the autism spectrum who are interested in information technology (IT). Lab sites are located nationally and involve 2-hour, technology club sessions, which operate once weekly. These clubs include up to approximately 20 participants on the autism spectrum and an average of two mentors with expertise and industry experience in the IT sector. The aim in the project described herein was to chart the operation of The Lab by observing seven of its Victorian technology clubs, and in so doing, to identify commonalities and differences between sites. The work was undertaken by Research Fellow, Dr Rebecca Flower at the Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre at La Trobe University, and prepared for The Lab management team.
Observations took place throughout October (Term 3) and November (Term 4), 2019 at both metropolitan and regional locations including established and new sites operating during either a weekday or weekend.
