Dr Peter Davies Senior Research Fellow, Archaeology

Peter Davies is a researcher whose work focuses on the social, industrial and environmental archaeology of colonial Australia. His major research interests include human engineering of natural landscapes and archaeologies of resource management, along with urban archaeology and material culture studies. Peter plays a leading role in the ARC-funded project 'Rivers of Gold: The Legacy of Historical Gold Mining for Victoria's Rivers', which builds on previous ARC research on water management on the goldfields. He has published four monographs, including An Archaeology of Australia Since 1788 (with Susan Lawrence) and has held an ARC Linkage Post-Doctoral fellowship investigating the archaeology of the Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney. In 2016 he received the La Trobe University Research Excellence Award. His latest book (with Susan Lawrence), Sludge: Disaster on Victoria's Goldfields, was published by Black Inc in August 2019.
