Ruth Quibell is a sociologist, a qualitative researcher and writer. Ruth writes for academic and general audiences. She is the author of The Promise of Things (Melbourne University Press, 2016). The Sydney Morning Herald described the book as "better than clever" and as a "quiet work of art". Ruth was also marked out as 'Best New Talent' in The Saturday Paper's books of 2016. Ruth presented at the 2017 gala of the Sydney Writers Festival. Her nonfiction essays, reviews and opinion pieces have appeared in Island, Meanjin, Dumbo Feather, The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, Womankind, and the ABC. She is Research Fellow at La Trobe University's Living with Disability Research Centre, where she is currently working on a project exploring the hospital encounters of people with cognitive disability. Her research interests are: social theory; qualitative analysis (particularly disability issues and hospitals); inequality, social justice and social security law; mortality and possessions.
