After completing his B.Sc.(Hons) at the Russell Grimwade School of Biochemistry, University of Melbourne, Steve joined the university's Department of Medicine at the Austin Hospital on a research project investigating the efficacy of the cytotoxic drug cytosine arabinoside in patients suffering from leukaemia. He later returned to the Biochemistry School at the University of Melbourne as a tutor/senior demonstrator for medical students while he investigated various aspects of iron metabolism. He moved to La Trobe University in 1991 as a senior demonstrator for the third year Biochemistry practical classes, and took on the Third Year Co-ordinator role soon after. He was promoted to lecturer in 2003 and became the Second Year Biochemistry Co-ordinator in 2010. He has taken on various roles and been involved in a number of committees in the Department of Biochemistry and in the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering (Biological Science Steering Committee Academic Progress Committee (APC) for Biological Sciences, FSTE Adviser of Studies, Turnitin User Group Learning Management System Advisory Group (LMSAG), Open Day Co-ordinator) and is currently a Postgraduate Student Adviser in the department.
