Dr Tarek Rana Lecturer in Accounting, Accounting & Data Analytics

Dr Tarek Rana is a Lecturer in Accounting in the Department of Accounting and Data Analytics. He earned his PhD in Accounting and Public Sector Management at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Prior to joining La Trobe Business School, Tarek held casual and sessional academic positions at the University of New South Wales in Canberra, the University of Canberra, and the University of Wollongong.

Prior to becoming an academic, Tarek was a senior manager and managing partner of professional accounting firms in Australia. He has considerable professional and industry experience in the areas of business services, taxation, auditing, and financial planning as well as consulting services including performance measurement and risk management.

Tarek has formed many industry partnerships for undertaking practice focused research projects to deliver long-term impact. Currently, he is working with three public service organisations at the Commonwealth level and developing ARC Linkage Grant applications. Tarek has just completed a large research project funded by Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA, UK) with Professor Zahirul Hoque.

He has received internal, external, and international competitive research grants for projects on risk management and performance measurement in public and not-for-profit (NFP) sectors context. His research has focused on management accounting, control, performance and risk management practices and appeared in international and interdisciplinary scholarly journals such as Public Money and Management, and Journal of Accounting and Organisational Change. Tarek is editing a special issue on risk management with Associate Professor Enrico Bracci and Professor Danture Wickramasinghe for Public Money and Management (PMM). He is co-editing two research books with Professor Zahirul Hoque. He is an ad-hoc reviewer for few refereed journals in accounting and public sector management. Tarek is currently co-supervising two PhD students.

Tarek has strong links with professional accounting bodies both in Australia and overseas, including CPA, CAANZ, CIMA, CGMA and AICPA. Currently, Tarek is serving as a member of the CPA Australia Albury-Wodonga Branch Council (February 2017 - Present), as a regional branch committee member of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand Albury-Wodonga Group (August 2016 - Present). Previously, he has served as an executive committee member of the CIMA Australia ACT Branch Committee (July 2012 - June 2016).

Tarek has mentored Honours, Masters and PhD students. In professional and business career, Tarek has supervised and mentored many professional accountants and analysts. He conducted a workshop by invitation from Mooreland City Council for small and medium sized businesses on "Managing Budget, Cash flow and Performance". He has extensive experience in working with industry, government, and not-for-profit organisations which has connected him with several professional, government and private organisations.
