Dr Dooyoung Kim is a Lecturer in Computer Science and Information Technology at La Trobe University. His research lies at the intersection of XR, AI, and human–computer interaction (HCI). He develops intelligent XR systems that connect people, intelligent agents, robots, and physical environments, with a particular interest in spatial memory, telepresence, embodied interaction, and human–AI collaboration.

 

Prior to joining La Trobe University, Dr Kim was a Senior Researcher at the KAIST KI-ITC Augmented Reality Research Center from 2024 to 2026. At KAIST, he served as a Co-Principal Investigator on a national Meta-Object research project and as System Integration Manager for a national OpenXR platform project. Through the NYU–KAIST Postdoctoral Collaboration, he also worked with the Future Reality Lab at New York University to develop tele-experience systems connecting remote museum environments in Daejeon and New York. His earlier research experience includes collaborative work with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) and a visiting research appointment at École des Ponts ParisTech in France.

 

Dr Kim received his PhD and master’s degree in Culture Technology from KAIST, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from KAIST. His doctoral research, completed under the supervision of Professor Woontack Woo, investigated space-adaptive mutual-space generation for mixed reality remote collaboration. His interdisciplinary background combines mechanical engineering, immersive technologies, human factors, spatial computing, and intelligent interactive systems.

 

His research has been published in leading international venues, including IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, ACM CHI, IEEE ISMAR, IEEE VR, and IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications. His work has received three IEEE ISMAR Best Paper Awards (Top 1%), including one in 2024 and two in 2025, as well as an ACM CHI Honourable Mention Award (Top 5%). He contributes to the international XR research community through the XRMemory workshop series and serves as Lead Guest Editor for the XRMemory Special Issue in Springer’s Virtual Reality journal (IF 5.4, Q1).

 

Beyond his academic work, Dr Kim is a Global Shaper of the World Economic Forum and was the Founding Curator of the Daejeon Hub. Through this role, he has supported interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers, technologists, industry partners, and emerging leaders. He seeks to apply his research in XR-enabled remote collaboration and experience-sharing technologies to address challenges facing local communities, including geographical barriers, unequal access to expertise and cultural experiences, and the revitalisation of regional cities.
