Gene Lim is a Research Officer with the Australian Research Center for Sex, Health and Society, and has worked with the center since 2018 across a range of projects. Gene's debut project, Understanding LGBTIQ+ Lives in Crisis, was an investigation into LGBTIQ+ peoples' engagement with Crisis Counseling services which went on to win the university-wide Excellence in Research Impact Award in 2021.

Since then, Gene has been involved in many projects and publications on a diverse range on research topics ranging from Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence, Homelessness, Mental Health, Sexual Health, Community Connection among LGBTIQ+ people, Suicide and Self-Harm, Sex Education and most recently, Alcohol and Other Drugs. His involvement across these projects has encompassed a range of roles from instrument design, data analysis, recruitment, field research, government consultation to knowledge translation.

Gene is a qualitative and quantitative researcher who is a PhD graduate from the School of Social Sciences at Monash University. His PhD thesis utilized a sexual fields framework to explore the lingering impact of intimate discrimination and lateral violence on the sexual habitus of Overseas-born Asian Men who have sex with Men (MSM) residing in Australia.

His reflections on both his and his participants' encounters with racialised intimate prejudice, and the subsequent projects undertaken to counteract the internalization of these prejudices have been collated into a chapter in Sexual Racism and Social Justice, a forthcoming collection featuring the reflections of lead researchers in this field.

Currently, Gene is the lead Investigator for Futures of Substance, a qualitative project investigating how LGBTQ+ people who have experienced difficulties with their AOD use understand and construct "problematic" AOD use.

Gene is also working on a range of academic outputs for the following projects:

1. Opening Doors - A multi-phase project investigating gaps in FDSV policy and service provision for LGBTQ persons experiencing FDSV.
2. Young People in Tech - A study investigating digitally-mediated Relationship and Sex Education among young Australians.
3. Private Lives 3 - A nationwide survey investigating the experiences and outcomes of LGBTQ adults in Australia.
4. Writing Themselves In 4 - A nationwide survey investigating the experiences and outcomes of LGBTQ adolescents and young adults in Australia.
5. Rainbow Realities - An in-depth analysis using data from a range of large-scale quantitative projects investigating special areas of need within the LGBTQ+ community,.

Gene has written for, and provided commentary on issues relating to sexual racism and intimate prejudice for news outlets such as Triple J, VICE, the ABC, Star Observer, The Conversation, Pink News and JOY FM. Gene has provided commentary on issues relating to Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence for outlets like JOY FM.
