BIO

Gerald Roche is a Lecturer in Linguistics in the Department of Languages and Cultures. His work focuses on issues of language and power, using approaches from linguistic and political anthropology. His academic contributions have been recognized in a range of awards, including a Discovery Early Career Research Award from the Australian Research Council and a Mid-Career Research Award from La Trobe University.

 

Gerald’s research generally covers two broad topics related to language and power: domination and resistance. His research has been supported by funding from the Australian Research Council, including a Discovery Early Career Research Award (2015 - 2018; DE150100388: Ethnicity and Assimilation in China: The Case of the Monguor in Tibet; Project CI) and an ARC Discovery Project (2018 -2022; DP180101651: Urbanising Western China: Nation-building on the Sino-Tibetan frontier; Lead author on funding application and project research fellow). In all his work, Gerald is committed to making links between research and action. He has worked with communities to support their language revitalization efforts, helped to establish and expand organizations for language activists, engaged in advocacy to influence government policies, and raised awareness of linguistic injustice through social and traditional media. 


Gerald welcomes inquiries from the media, and from representatives of organizations or communities who are intersted in forming partnerships. He is also open to receiving queries from potential graduate students whose interests closely align with his areas of expertise.
