BIO
Ian Woolford is Lecturer and Discipline Lead in Hindi Language in the Department of Languages and Cultures at La Trobe University. He teaches all levels of Hindi as well as subjects in Asian Studies.
Ian’s research interests span Hindi and regional north-Indian literature, oral traditions, and popular culture in North India. He is also active in public scholarship, contributing to media and community initiatives that promote langauge diversity in India and South Asian languages and cultural understanding in Australia.
His current projects include a Hindi poetry reader for language learners and an English translation and study of the nineteenth-century Bhojpuri lyric text Badmash Darpaṇ (1885), attributed to a Banaras hooligan (gunda) named Teg Ali. Ian also works with sources in Persian and Urdu languages.
Ian is the La Trobe Branch President of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU).
