Kim retired in 2022 from the Victorian Government environment department after 32 years of service working in a variety of biodiversity and land management policy and research areas. Key contributions were leading reviews of the State’s native vegetation policies, market based approaches to biodiversity protection, developing a long term approach to biodiversity across the whole of the Melbourne region under the Melbourne Strategic Assessment and as Research Director of the Arthur Rylah Instute for Environmental Research from 2012 to 2022. Prior to this he was a senior policy officer in the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service between 1984 and 1990 including leading the bird and bat banding schemes. He completed his PhD at the University of Melbourne in 1984 researching a variety of aspects of the ecology, behaviour and taxonomy of ibis (and spoonbills and herons).
