BIO
Dr Kane Middleton is an Associate Professor of Sport and Occupational Biomechanics within the Discipline of Sport and Exercise Science and the Sport, Performance, and Nutrition Research Group. Kane also serves as La Trobe University's Academic Program Director for the La Trobe - Sheffield Hallam joint PhD program. He completed his PhD in Sports Biomechanics at The University of Western Australia and has previously held post-doctoral positions at The University of Western Australia and the University of Wollongong.
Kane teaches undergraduate biomechanics subjects in the Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science and has a strong research focus, having supervised 12 PhD, 5 Masters, and 13 Honours (by thesis) students to completion. He currently supervises 7 PhD candidates.
Kane has expertise in the quantification of physical performance (including military task performance), biomechanical modelling of human movement, and the use of non-invasive wearable technology to measure movement, including leading validation projects for international sporting organisations.
Kane's primary research interests span 1) accuracy-based sports and activities, 2) occupational physical performance, and 3) movement variability. He has published >80 peer-reviewed journal articles, 2 book chapters, and >50 reports for industry partners. Kane has a strong track record of industry engagement, having attracted grant/consultancy funding of ~$3.5 M (AUD) from partners including: Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, David Caple and Associates, Defence Science and Technology Group, Defence Science Institute, U.S. Department of Defense, data61/CSIRO, the Victorian Institute of Sport, and the Australian Institute of Sport.
