Lakshitha Samarasinghe Gunasekara is a Lecturer at La Trobe Business School. He completed his PhD in responsible artificial intelligence at La Trobe University's Centre for Data Analytics and Cognition (CDAC). His thesis, "Building Responsible Artificial Intelligence Systems using Distributed Ledger Technologies", examined how accountability can be maintained across the AI software lifecycle. It developed a three-layer provenance framework covering data, process and decision provenance, applied to AI systems that support sustainable development goals.

Lakshitha's research contributions span responsible AI frameworks, generative AI applications, and cybersecurity for smart energy systems, with publications in Scopus-indexed journals including Applied System Innovation, Energies, and Robotics. His work sits at the intersection of AI ethics, blockchain technology, and sustainable development.

Lakshitha holds a degree in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering and a Postgraduate Diploma in Software Architecture. Before moving to academia, he progressed from software engineer to Associate Technical Lead at WSO2 Inc., where he developed enterprise API management solutions and led cross-functional teams in designing scalable software architectures. He has also provided AI consulting services across industry sectors, in areas ranging from big data analytics to generative AI applications.

He has volunteered with the IEEE for 16 years. He was Treasurer of the IEEE Victorian Section from 2024 to 2026, and serves as Conference Secretary of the 1st IEEE International Conference on Responsible AI (IRAI 2026, Melbourne, 3 to 5 September 2026). He is a member of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Technical Committee on Responsible AI and of the IES Student Activities Committee team. His volunteer service has been recognised with the Larry K. Wilson Regional Student Activities Award in 2025, awarded by the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board to one student member in each IEEE Region for extraordinary contribution to student activities. He also received Best Student Volunteer from the IEEE Australia Council in 2026, and Outstanding Volunteer and Outstanding Student Volunteer from the IEEE Victorian Section in 2024 and 2023.
