BIO

Dr Muhammad Jahangir Ali is an Associate Professor of Accounting in the Department of Accounting, Data Analytics, Economics and Finance at La Trobe Business School, La Trobe University. Prior to this role, he held academic appointments as Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University and Lecturer at the University of New England. Jahangir has also served as a visiting scholar at the University of Otago, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Independent University Bangladesh, the University of Rajshahi, and Asian University. In addition, he brings extensive teaching and research experience from the University of Rajshahi, where he held the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Accounting. His teaching portfolio covers Financial Accounting and Reporting, Accounting for Managers, Introduction to Accounting and Finance, International Accounting, Advanced Accounting Theory, and Governance and Risk Management at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

 

Jahangir earned his Ph.D. from La Trobe University and a Master of Business (Accounting) degree from Monash University. His research interests encompass corporate disclosure, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility reporting, accounting quality, international accounting, financial statement fraud, audit quality, and capital markets. He has published 55 papers in peer-reviewed journals. His research has appeared in leading outlets, including six papers in ABDC A* journals and 27 in ABDC A journals. These include the Journal of Business Finance & Accounting (ABDC A*), The British Accounting Review (ABDC A*), Journal of Accounting and Public Policy (ABDC A*), and the Journal of Business Ethics (FT50), as well as Accounting and Business Research, Abacus, Accounting & Finance, Australian Journal of Management, Global Finance Journal, Journal of Accounting Literature, International Review of Financial Analysis, International Review of Economics and Finance, International Journal of Managerial Finance, Pacific-Basin Finance Journal, and the International Journal of Accounting. Jahangir's scholarly works have been cited more than 3,500 times.

 

Jahangir has successfully supervised 27 Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students, including 16 PhD candidates, and is currently supervising four PhD students. His contribution has been formally recognised by La Trobe Business School through the 2025 Graduate Research Supervision Award for outstanding supervision and support of graduate research students. He has also served as an external examiner for 37 PhD Theses. In addition, Jahangir has demonstrated strong research leadership by securing competitive external funding, including five grants from the Accounting & Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ) and a $35,000 CPA Global Research Perspectives Program (GRPP) grant.

 

He currently serves on the editorial boards of Accounting and Finance, Australian Journal of Management, Accounting Research Journal, Research in Accounting in Emerging Economies, Asian Journal of Business and Accounting, and Journal of Applied Research in Management Accounting. Jahangir also served as an Associate Editor of the Accounting Research Journal from 2018 to 2024.

 

Jahangir has undertaken significant roles in university service, management, and leadership, including Accounting Discipline Lead, Graduate Research Coordinator (GRC), Research Seminar Coordinator, Faculty Human Ethics Committee member, Curriculum Advisory Committee member, and Unsatisfactory Progress Committee member. He is currently a member of the Student Academic Misconduct Committee (SAMC), LBS Research Committee and the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC).
