BIO
I am a Senior Lecturer in Sociology and joined the Department of Social Inquiry in 2015.
My research focuses on migration, employment and social inequality in the context of policies and governance. I am interested in the intersections of culture and economy, and in how inequalities and precarity are produced or challenged through regulations, social practices and cultural perspectives (f.e.x ideas of deserving-ness and difference). My research has focused on regional migration and settlement, migrants' social and spatial mobilities, precarious employment and migrant status, temporary migrants' and refugees' employment experiences, Australian migration and multiculturalism policies, discourse on refugees, and racialisation in different work contexts.
I am committed to research that seeks to better understand material and symbolic inequalities especially in the context of migration and that contributes to fairer societies by collaborating with stakeholders in government and the community sector. My publications have developed critical perspectives on migration research and have analysed how migration regulations co-produce precariousness alongside different dimensions of social relations. These include articles in the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, , Ethnic and Racial Studies, Labour & Industry, Sociology and the Journal of Sociology, the book Becoming Australian (MUP, 2013) and the edited collection Critical Reflections on migration, ‘race’ and multiculturalism (Routledge, 2017). I am also a convenor of the TASA Thematic Group on Rural Issues.
I live and work on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations.
