BIO
Dr Matthew Varley is a Senior Lecturer in Sport Science at La Trobe University. His research focuses on acceleration and sprint profiling, the integration of physical and technical performance data, and understanding how physical, technical, and tactical match performance relate to success in team sports. He applies data science and wearable technology to practical performance questions, particularly in Australian Rules Football and Soccer.
Matthew leads research projects that use athlete tracking data (GNSS/LPS), match event data, and advanced analytical techniques to profile sprint efforts, analyse team structure, and monitor player development. He collaborates with elite sporting organisations, including the Essendon Football Club and Football Victoria, to support evidence-based coaching, athlete monitoring, and performance decision-making.
Prior to joining La Trobe, Matthew worked as Research Coordinator and Senior Sport Scientist at the Football Performance & Science Department at the Aspire Academy in Qatar. He has also held academic roles at Victoria Uinversity, contributing to teaching and research in sport and exercise physiology. Matthew completed his undergraduate studies at RMIT and his PhD at Victoria University titled “Acceleration and Fatigue in Soccer”. He has also worked with the Victorian Institute of Sport and provided sport science advice to several elite sporting clubs and sport technology companies, including Football Federation Australia, Football Victoria, Catapult, Fusion Sport, Melbourne Victory, Melbourne City, Perth Glory Football Clubs, and the Western Bulldogs and Essendon Football Clubs.
Matthew supervises Honours, Master's, and PhD students in the areas of sport analytics, athlete monitoring, and performance modelling. He welcomes enquiries from prospective students with interests in applied data science, athlete tracking, or integrated performance analysis.
Matthew currently leads or collaborates on research projects with AFL, football and sport technology organisations, focusing on sprint detection algorithms, contextual analysis of performance data, and athlete development modelling. His work includes industry-linked studies on GNSS validation, athlete monitoring, and integrated physical-technical performance profiling.
At La Trobe, Matthew coordinates the undergraduate subject Sport Analytics and Performance Analysis and the postgraduate subject Sport Data Capture in the Master of Sport Analytics. He is also the Graduate Research Coordinator for the Sport and Exercise Science discipline, supporting research training and supervision across the department. His teaching develops student capabilities in Microsoft Excel, R, and applied performance data analysis, with a strong emphasis on real-world problem solving.
