Scott McKinnon is a historian with a research background in oral history, environmental history and histories of sexuality.
Scott's most recent research investigates the social impacts of environmental change, Through oral history interviews and archival research, his work examines intersections of place, memory and emotion, particularly within communities navigating changed environmental conditions and/or recovering from bushfires, floods, droughts or earthquakes.
Scott's work on the enduring role of disasters in the lives of survivors, communities and landscapes has been published in leading history, geography and emergency management journals. He has consulted with government and NGOs in the development of inclusive emergency management protocols.
With Margaret Cook, Scott is co-editor of the landmark collection Disasters in Australia and New Zealand: Historical Approaches to Understanding Catastrophe (Palgrave MacMillan), the first scholarly collection on disaster histories in both countries.
Scott has also published extensively on queer Australian histories, particularly the history of Sydney's gay community. His first book, Gay Men at the Movies: Cinema, Memory and the History of a Gay Male Community, was published by Intellect in 2016.
In 2019, Scott was awarded (with Catherine Freyne) the Oral History Australia Media Award and was shortlisted for a NSW Premier's History Prize for a two-part radio documentary on the history of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. The documentary was produced for the ABC RN History Listen program.
Scott is the vice president of Oral History NSW and regularly leads oral history training workshops. He has conducted oral history interviews for the collections of the State Library of NSW and the National Library of Australia.
In 2021, Scott was awarded a prestigious Nancy Keesing Fellowship at the State Library of NSW.
He is also the vice president of Sydney's Pride History Group, a community history group dedicated to researching, recording and writing about Sydney's LGBTQA+ histories.
