BIO
Dr Stavroula (Stephie) Nikoloudis is a lecturer and coordinator of the Greek Studies program in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. She researches Greek language and society from Mycenaean to modern times.
As an archaeologist, she specialises in the Aegean Bronze Age and the Linear B script. Linear B reflects the oldest surviving form of the Greek language, ca. 1450-1200 BCE. Her primary research to date explores issues of socio-economic organisation, identity and cultural diversity in the Mycenaean world. In particular, she has argued that the authority figure known as the ra-wa-ke-ta, traditionally interpreted as the military commander of the state, played a key role in integrating outsiders into Mycenaean society. Her teaching centres on Classical and Modern Greek language and literature. She is especially interested in questions of ethnic identity and cultural diversity, migration, diachronic language development and language education.
Since taking on the role of coordinator in July 2018, she has been working with the University Library to incorporate La Trobe's Dardalis Archives of the Hellenic Diaspora into the educational and research initiatives of the Greek Studies program. The Archives reflect the migration of Greeks to Australia and constitute a treasure trove of information of national and international significance. One of her research projects involves examining the generational changes in language use and views regarding identity of Greek Australians in Melbourne.
She is working with La Trobe's WIL division to set up subject and volunteer internships at organisations such as Pronia (multi-service provider for Greek Australians), local radio stations such as 3ZZZ Ethnic Community Radio - Greek program, the Greek Centre (Lonsdale St) and Fronditha Care (aged care) for students to expand their Greek language use and improve their employability skills while simultaneously helping to reduce the social isolation of older members of the community, thereby contributing to a more healthy, equitable and inclusive society for all. Placements have also occurred at Ethnolink (translation industry) and schools that teach Greek. The goal is to empower students to become confident users of spoken and written Greek and creative and engaged bilingual or multilingual members of the wider community.
She has worked with travel provider Touchdown Tours to design a 21-day Study Tour to Greece (2019, 2023) and a virtual Tour (2021) which are producing fruitful avenues for collaboration with universities overseas in the fields of language acquisition and intercultural communication. She is a member of La Trobe's 'Migration and Multiculturalism' Research Interest Group. She is also a member of the Pharos Alliance, active since 2021, aimed at reinvigorating Greek language education and use in Victoria/Australia.
