BIO
Dr Shane Worrell is a qualitative researcher at La Trobe's Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS).
He is a sociologist who focuses on various aspects of LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing, including family, domestic and sexual violence; informal mental health support; and the role of LGBTIQ+ community-controlled organisations in delivering services to community.
Shane's research into LGBTQ+ family, domestic and sexual violence has focused on how users of violence access and engage with Men's Behaviour Change Programs; practitioners' role in providing family violence service pathways for LGBTQ+ people; and family violence service adaption during COVID-19.
He is the lead author of three notable ARCSHS-published reports: Catalysts of Change, Responsive Pandemic Practice and Lean on Me.
Shane is currently a researcher on the following projects:
Optimise+: Strengthening LGBTQ+ community-controlled mental health and AOD services
Under Pressure: Unwanted sexual behaviours against LGBTQ+ people
He has also published in the areas of digital media and refugee settlement, focusing on Karen migration to central Victoria, Australia.
During his PhD candidacy, Shane worked as a research associate on the ARC Discovery Project, Ageing and New Media, and tutored in the social sciences and humanities at the Bendigo campus, receiving a La Trobe teaching award in 2019.
Shane is also a Human Rights Press Award-winning journalist, whose writing has appeared in global, regional and national publications, most notably in Cambodia, where he was based from 2011-15.
