BIO

Dr Shane Worrell is a qualitative researcher at La Trobe's Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS).

He is a sociologist who focuses on various aspects of LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing, including family, domestic and sexual violence; informal mental health support; and the role of LGBTIQ+ community-controlled organisations in delivering services to community.

Shane's research into LGBTQ+ family, domestic and sexual violence has focused on how users of violence access and engage with Men's Behaviour Change Programs; practitioners' role in providing family violence service pathways for LGBTQ+ people; and family violence service adaption during COVID-19.

He has also published in the areas of digital media and refugee settlement, focusing on Karen migration to central Victoria, Australia.

During his PhD candidacy, Shane worked as a research associate on the ARC Discovery Project, Ageing and New Media, and tutored in the social sciences and humanities at the Bendigo campus, receiving a La Trobe teaching award in 2019.

Shane is a SOPA Award-winning journalist whose work has also been honoured by the Human Rights Press Awards. His journalism has appeared in global, regional and national publications, most notably in Cambodia, where he was based from 2011-15.
