RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research on climate law, international environmental law, natural resource governance and questions of human rights, law and development and economic inequality has broken new ground in these fields by combining a technical mastery of specialised areas of law with a sophisticated theoretical toolkit that draws on socio-legal methods and interdisciplinary insights. My innovative approach to legal methodology unsettles conventional barriers between public and private law and treats regulation and markets as co-constitutive, in order to enrich understandings of contemporary transnational authority in environmental governance.

My ARC DECRA project "Resource Struggles and International Law: Navigating Global Transformations" examines how international law both shapes, and is shaped by, struggles over natural resources in periods of global transformation. It aims generate new knowledge about how international law is used by different actors to assert their authority and power over resources and to secure access to natural resources. Expected outcomes include empirical analyses of three key periods of global transformation in the twentieth century and a socio-legal analysis of how international law is shaping struggles over natural resources during the current transition to a net zero world. This should provide significant benefits by assisting countries to better navigate the current legal, geopolitical and economic transformations.

My project "Mainstreaming Climate Change in Legal Education" (https://climateconsciouslawyers.com/) seeks to transform legal education to ensure the next generation of lawyers is provided training and support to be ‘climate literate’ or ‘climate conscious’ legal practitioners and have the skills to deliver legal services and promote justice in a climate transformed world. The project will thereby improve the administration of law by ensuring that the next generation of lawyers will be equipped to address some of the key social, political and moral challenges of our times, and to have the skills to navigate the disruptions that climate impacts and risks might create within the legal system.
